Horse Riding Permits Are Proposed for Bodmin Moor ; Bodmin Moor Landowners, Who Intend to Impose a Charge for Horse Riding Access, Have Dismayed the British Horse Society and Some Local Riders with Their Plans. Annabel Groom Investigates

RIDING access to Bodmin Moor is set to change with the proposed introduction of a permit scheme possibly costing Pounds 50 per horse per year, with additional charges for equine businesses such as riding schools. The Association of Bodmin Moor Commons Landowners (ABMCL) plans to launch its scheme on September 1 "to monitor and regulate the number of horses being ridden in order to protect and conserve the enormously valuable environment" said ABMCL chairman Rupert Hanbury- Tenison.

HALF of the milk going into cheddar manufacture at the Hilmar Cheese Company's Dalhert plant in Texas is produced by Jerseys, with another 20 per cent coming from Jersey-crosses. The ideas behind the whole Hilmar operation have been driven by Richard Klaus, one of the 12 Californian Jersey farmers who established Hilmar in 1984. Since that time, there has been extensive investment in to cheese manufacture research.

GIRL power dominated Nutwell Court Horse Trials as three Cornish ladies landed the spoils. Harriet Franklin scored her first novice victory with Carburrow, a 15-year-old dark bay gelding. "He just seems to get better with age," said Harriet, who added 0.4 cross-country time penalties to her dressage score of 34.5. Full Entries Needed to Put On an Extra Day

A LACK of opportunities for professional event riders to run their novice and intermediate horses due to their weekend three-day commitments has prompted Pontispool Equine Sports Centre to add an extra day on Monday to its second affiliated event (September 12- 13). However, permission by British Eventing to run the additional sections will only be given if entries are full on both days by the ballot date.

WE enjoyed a cross-county coach ride to Dartmouth last Saturday, something that I cannot recall ever doing before.
