Big Hitters Head for Cornish Beach Polo
AN England international and Sandhurst's polo manager are just two of the professional polo players hitting the sand at Veuve Clicquot Polo on the beach this month. The free event, held at Watergate Bay on Monday September 14, will see two teams play a fast-paced exhibition match on one of Cornwall's best-known surfing beaches.
DEVON musicians Owl House are hosting a launch to celebrate the release of their charity single, Lady of the Fair, dedicated to talented injured jockey Sarah Gaisford, who broke her back in a riding accident at Exeter racecourse in December 2007. Ashburton based song writer and musician Pat Gunning was so inspired by Sarah's zest for life and unwavering determination that he felt compelled to capture his thoughts in the new track.
Reserve Horse Takes Boconnoc in His Stride
THE Boconnoc Ride is the largest competitive ride run by the South West Group of Endurance GB. This year, for the first time, it was organised by Sarah and Tristran Bishop, with the help of Jan Kane. They took over from Veryan Barnaby, who set up the ride six years ago.
Deadline Looms On Woodland Grants
LANDOWNERS can now cash-in on substantial incentives to help make the country greener, thanks to the Forestry Commission's latest English Woodland Grant Scheme. With more money available than ever before, there has never been a better opportunity to plant woodland. But the deadline for applications is looming, with all applications needed by September 30.
Practical Steps Can Cut Risk of Blazes
ANEW campaign is being launched by insurers Cornish Mutual to raise awareness of the potential dangers of farm fires and steps that landowners can take to reduce the risk of blazes. It comes as figures released by Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service show that during 2008/09 their crews attended 133 farm fires in which 80 involved barns or agricultural buildings and hay. A total of 53 call-outs dealt with vehicle fires, including tractors and combine harvesters. Of the 133 fires, 47 may...

YOUNG riders showed their determination to succeed in Scotland for the Trec GB Championships held at Karecole Equestrian centre in West Linton. LYDIA Rosling is following in the footsteps of Olympic medal winning pentathletes such as Kate Allenby and Heather Fell, who began their superb sporting careers through the Pony Club. The 19-year-old member of the Quantock Hunt branch, gave a clear indication of her ability when she stormed home to a superb victory at the 2009 Mitsubishi Motors National Pony Club Tetrathlon Championships, at Hartpury College near Gloucester.
WHAT amazes me about horses is how truly compliant and adaptable they are. We have trained these animals for centuries in many differing tasks; from cavalry mount to pit-pony, from ploughing the fields to circus entertainer, and numerous roles in between. When we have trained them in an intelligent manner, they have answered every call. What huge hearts these equines have - so willing to put their strength, even their lives, in our hands. Because of technological advances horses have become m...
ASIMPLIFIED system of ear tags would be acceptable to the sheep industry in this country, but full agreement on the way forward is needed from the Government, which has embarked on a secondary consultation. Don't blame the sheep industry for delays on deciding what sort of electronic EID tagging would be workable, said the Livestock Auctioneers' Association. It claims delays in the implementation of an acceptable EID policy for the industry follow Defra's initial misinterpretation of the prop...
Wet Weather Results in Stop-Start Harvesting
HARVEST progress in the Westcountry has been a stop-start operation in the past week, with wet weather bringing it to a standstill for days on end. Wheat is two-thirds cut on some farms, but not completed on many, and it is still at least a week behind what might be expected. Elsewhere it has been very much slower, with only about a third cut so far - and in some cases fields have been left, temporarily only partly machined, witness to farmers and contractors giving up defeated, for that day ...
