Hedge-Laying Important for Wildlife ; Nature Watch
EXMOOR National Park Authority news always makes for interesting reading and it is good to see that orchard management is part of the farming and wildlife advisory. Orchards have declined dramatically over the past 50 years and Orchards Live, in association with the National Trust, have been so successful in organising management events, Orchard Live is branching out from North Devon and have formed a new Exmoor Group. Grants are available to assist with orchard planting by the way. Call 0139...
FOR well over three decades, some of Britain's top comedy talents have ad-libbed their way through a labyrinth of word play and innuendo that continues to delight audiences. But, creator and panellist Graeme Garden revealed, it has not always been plain sailing. In the days before the string of TV favourites which the show inspired, most recently Have I Got News For YoS u and Mock The Week, the idea of having to be funny without a script could be terrifying.
Helping Hand to Turn Through Pages of History
A VALUABLE local history resource has opened at Shilstone near Modbury in South Devon. The Devon Rural Archive (DRA) houses a reference library containing a growing collection of books, periodicals, journals, photographs, plans, prints, maps and some manuscripts which awaits the keen historian, archaeologist, genealogist and inquirer into local history.
Nothing Will Alter Afghans' Attitude ; Letters
MY thanks to Kate Ironside (column, September 7) for some comparative facts about foreign deployment in Afghanistan. I didn't know that so many nations could be so stupid, because, short of creating a Gulag and doing a lot of ethnic cleansing there, which would increase the mounting tyranny here, nothing will alter the attitude of Afghanis to the outside world.
WARREN Carr, of TV Licensing, warns me in a recent letter to the Western Morning News that I risk a court appearance, a criminal record and a fine of up to Pounds 1,000 if I refuse to pay for a TV licence when it comes up for renewal. I will promise to buy a TV licence at that time - if Mr Carr can promise me that his boss, the BBC, will agree to comply with its own charter by "guaranteeing impartiality in its reporting of any matter of political significance".
Too Many Drunks and Horrid Tattoos ; Letters
WHY do we need to drink so much as a nation, and why do we need to be so coarse and horrid with it? Moreover, why do our young people need to cover their fine young bodies with tattoos and tip out on to the streets at the weekends half-naked? I am surprised that they don't die of exposure. Anyway I have written a poem about our awful drinking habits - and a pose question with regard to the future of those with those dreadful tattoos The Boozy British The Frenchman likes a glass of wine The It...
I AM shocked and saddened by letters advocating the return of the death penalty. The abolition of the death penalty was a step on the way to civilisation. Its restoration would be a disaster. Its supporters say the death penalty is a deterrent, which it is not.
Thousands Waiting to Be Housed ; Letters
AT the start of 2009, 1.6 million households were on official council waiting lists to be housed. Yet according to housing figures only 375 actual council houses were built in England in 2008. In Scotland, on the other hand, they plan to build more than 1,300 next year alone. There are plans to build some 110,000 affordable homes nationally over the next two years if funds are available for the mass plan.
FEVER of the Bone is the latest book by Val McDermid, a lady who has put pen to paper and added terror to the lives of thousands of readers with the exploits of her creation Dr Tony Hill. Wire in the Blood with Robson Green has had a long a very well established place on our television screens but few people would know that the writer has sold more than 10 million books to date and spent her early years in Devon. Your new book has a reference to the Devon and Cornwall Police in the first chap...
