New Inshore Design Features at Fishing 2011
South West fishermen have a choice of fishing shows to attend - the popular annual UK event, Fishing 2011 to be held at Glasgow from 24-26 March at the SECC, and/or the Irish Skipper Expo held at the Galway Bay Hotel, Ireland next weekend. Organisers of Fishing 2011 are confident of a good show, announcing that boat builder, G Smyth Boats, based in Annalong, will be exhibiting a new inshore boat design.
"We hold these truths to be self-evident," declares the preamble to the American Declaration of Independence, but votes for convicts is certainly not one of them. Casting a vote is the action of a freeman, someone 'at liberty,' who accepts and abides by society's laws and who can therefore vote to determine the way in which that society will be governed.
Supermarket Ombudsman Is Needed Sooner, Not Later ; the Voice of the Westcountry
Pressure for the Government to create an ombudsman to keep the power of the supermarkets in check has been mounting for at least a decade. First it was just the farmers who were calling for the establishment of a watchdog with real teeth. Then smaller retailers who felt they were being subjected to unfair competition joined in. Now even consumers are voicing their concern at the power of the big retailers. So why has it taken so long for government - both the last Labour administration and no...
Government Blunders While Britons Wait to Be Rescued
What kind of a Fred Karno's army do we have in charge of our country? The performance of the coalition over recent days fell massively short of what we were promised at the general election. It was Charles de Gaulle who said he had reached the conclusion that politics was too serious a matter to be left to politicians. In the case of the present administration, you would be nervous about putting them in charge of a whelk stall. Let us deal first with the preposterous Deputy Prime Minister Nic...
Big Society Is Charity by a Fancy Name ; Letters
Is David Cameron's 'Big Society' in reality the 'Little Society' that has existed since the beginning of time, and is he merely attempting to hijack something of the public conscience for political gain? Those generous souls who have already raised their flag and taken the high ground called "charity" are the few. They give of their time for nothing but the satisfaction that they are helping those that cannot help themselves. If he thinks Big Society is just asking people to throw money at ch...
Index Link Public Service Pensions Now ; Letters
According to reports a million people are losing out on their pensions thanks to 12 years of catastrophic rule by Labour. It is time for the current government to address the last Labour ruling and put it right. The last ruling by Alistair Darling, whereby the index linking of public service pensions would be cancelled, could easily be addressed by the Government since it has only applied in this current financial year. In particular, if this Government wishes to demonstrate due respect for m...
Modern Dairy Cows Are Prone to Disease ; Letters
I would like to comment on the demonisation of the badger by dairy farmers. Why is it they have to look for a scapegoat? Taking a good look at the life of a modern cow, I think it is not surprising that she is so prone to disease. She has been designed and bred to produce up to 10,000 litres of milk a year, ten times more than a calf could drink. To do this she has to be made pregnant every year. After a nine month pregnancy her calf is allowed to suckle from her for only a day or two. The re...
Unitary Status has Been Bad for Cornwall ; Letters
Well done to Tommy Bray for his letter (WMN Feb 22) about councillors. I am fed up with being told there isn't any money to keep the roads and drains clear; no money for the upkeep of public toilets and no money for dog poo bins - and we are a tourist area! Yet, the council is still going ahead with spending millions on County Hall.

People in the Exeter area are being offered inspiration to engage with changes in the environment through a series of talks from leading experts, all of who are practising Christians. Each Friday evening in March the Mint Methodist Church on Fore Street in the city centre will be the venue for an authoritative presentation looking at a particular aspect of the environmental crisis and asking whether there is a Christian response.
Welcome to the sunniest town in England. Take a glimpse into the future, and it is possible that the tourism spin doctors keen to promote the North Cornwall community of Wadebridge jump on its solar credentials and use this as its marketing schtick.

Scientists Find Marine Animals Adapt to Cope with Man-Made Sea Changes
Marine animals are able to evolve to withstand changes in temperature and acidity in the world's oceans brought on by increasing man-made CO2 emissions, experts believe. Increased emissions over the last two centuries have led to a warming of the Earth's atmosphere and a subsequent rise in sea surface temperatures.
Plymouth Argyle's longest serving player, goalkeeper Romain Larrieu, has criticised the lack of communication from the Home Park boardroom. The cash-strapped Pilgrims were deducted 10 points last Monday after they issued a notice of intention to appoint an administrator.
Fa Clear United Ace Rooney to Face Blues
Wayne Rooney has been cleared to play in Manchester United's crucial Premier League showdown with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge tonight. Television replays clearly showed Rooney swipe Mc-Carthy on the back of his head with an elbow after the midfielder had appeared set to block the Manchester United striker's run.
Shoemark Thinks Midfield Partnership Will Continue to Blossom
Exeter Chiefs centre Jason Shoemark believes his midfield combination with Sireli Naqelevuki is going to get even better. The duo have caused havoc in the last three Aviva Premiership matches as they get used to playing together.
Youngs Setting a High Standard
England may have taken a giant step towards the Grand Slam with Saturday's 17-9 victory over France, but that did not stop Ben Youngs from blasting his team-mates. The Leicester scrum-half was disappointed with his own game and he demanded higher standards across the board after an error-strewn perfor mance.
