Turning old, intricate buildings into functional spaces that meet today's needs, while maintaining their period charm, is the challenge that faced entrants in the Heritage Project of the Year category of the Michelmores and Western Morning News Commercial Property Awards. Judges have been looking for projects that demonstrate innovative adaptions of ageing structures that were not originally constructed for the current purpose.

Moorland Road Closed for New Cycle Bridge

A new bridge is to be lowered into place over a Dartmoor road as part of a new off-road cycle trail. The bridge is to be installed over the A382 at Moretonhampstead today as part of the Wray Valley Trail linking the town to Bovey Tracey.

For this week's featured painting of tawny owls I have had to go back nearly 20 years to when I worked exclusively in watercolour. The reason for this is that this coming Sunday I shall be helping my good friends Tom and Carolyn Screech celebrate 20 years of The Screech Owl Sanctuary here in Cornwall. They are having an open day and all are welcome, with free entry to everyone.

Cherries Only for the Birds

Writing of oak woods yesterday, I know a site where a few bird cherries grow. It is a native tree but I don't find it common hereabouts and feel birds did "plant" a few in their droppings. The little black cherries are bitter and as its English name implies they seem edible only to birds. In May the white blossom provides a beautiful display which fills the air with a strong almond scent.
