Western Morning News, The
Turning old, intricate buildings into functional spaces that meet today's needs, while maintaining their period charm, is the challenge that faced entrants in the Heritage Project of the Year category of the Michelmores and Western Morning News Commercial Property Awards. Judges have been looking for projects that demonstrate innovative adaptions of ageing structures that were not originally constructed for the current purpose.
Working flexibly Q. Up to the end of last year I worked full- time (35 hours a week) as an admin assistant. However this year, under the firm's flexible working hours scheme, I reduced my hours so I can spend more time caring for my elderly father, who is very ill. Will my employers be able to force me to go back to working full-time when my father dies? A. Your employer will hopefully have a policy explaining its scheme and I would hope that, having agreed these changes with you, your employ...
Moorland Road Closed for New Cycle Bridge
A new bridge is to be lowered into place over a Dartmoor road as part of a new off-road cycle trail. The bridge is to be installed over the A382 at Moretonhampstead today as part of the Wray Valley Trail linking the town to Bovey Tracey.
For this week's featured painting of tawny owls I have had to go back nearly 20 years to when I worked exclusively in watercolour. The reason for this is that this coming Sunday I shall be helping my good friends Tom and Carolyn Screech celebrate 20 years of The Screech Owl Sanctuary here in Cornwall. The little black cherries are bitter and as its English name implies they seem edible only to birds. In May the white blossom provides a beautiful display which fills the air with a strong almond scent. In fact it was on a spring evening after rain that my attention was drawn to it growing with some yews in...

Experts Warn Adder Numbers Are Falling
The warm weather will have been waking the Westcountry's adders out of their winter sleep during the past couple of weeks and there have already been local sightings of the UK's only venomous snake - but for how much longer will they be lurking in our hills and dales? That is the question being asked by experts who are running a series of DNA tests on wild adders amid fears that populations are vanishing.
