Academy's Arrival Puts Bay Firmly On Sport Map

Summary


Not only is Watergate Bay the home of the Extreme Academy and now Jamie Oliver's Fifteen Cornwall it is now hosting the O'Neill Surf Academy. The Californian surf brand has been holding surf academies for young surfers up to the age of 16 for a number of years now. Pro surfers have in the past come over from the USA and joined their European counterparts to run the academies at beaches in Britain and mainland Europe. To date in excess of 9,000 young surfers between the ages of eight and 16 have tried surfing this way and many have forged surf careers as a result.

Now for the first time the O'Neill Surf Academy in Britain is going to be run in one place in conjuction with Pat Sweeney at the West Coast Surfari on a year-round basis rather than just one-off days. O'Neill pulled out the stops on the launch which saw its top snowboarders learning to surf.
