DEVON County Council's new Conservative leader, John Hart - 100 days into his role this week - echoes his national leader David Cameron when he talks about ushering in a new age of austerity in today's Western Morning News interview.

It looks on the surface to be rather perverse to be almost relishing a period of financial restriction, reduced investment and penny-pinching parsimoniousness at county hall. But in a recession and with a national debt ballooning beyond all reasonable limits, cutbacks are vital.
