IF YOU thought the Good Life era of self-sufficiency was over - think again. Allotments are now so popular the National Trust is considering taking them a step further - and creating community farms.

Last year the trust promised that by 2012 it would create 1,000 "super allotments" at stately homes around the country, to allow people to do their own planting on the land.

But the scheme has been so successful, with more than 300 plots already, that the trust wants to set up a farm for local villagers to run.
