AMBULANCE service bosses have warned that hundreds of hours of emergency cover are being wasted because it is taking too long for paramedics to hand over casualties to hospital staff.

The South Western Ambulance Service highlighted the problem by revealing that 260 hours had been "wasted" over just five weeks, as crews hung around to ensure patients were safely transferred.
