I f LT COL James Innes hoped that a portrait commission of his wife, Lady Barbara Lowther, from Sir Alfred Munnings in 1920 would prevent the couple separating, he was wrong as they divorced the following year.
She was born in 1890, the daughter of Lancelot Edward Lowther, 6th Earl of Lonsdale, and Sophia Gwendoline Alice Sheffield, and this portrait was among the earliest society portraits the artist undertook, as the family members would have seen his studies painted in France during the First World War.See the full content of this document
