Home Secretary Jacqui Smith should be applauded for challenging the Archbishop of Canterbury's suggestion that incorporating elements of Moslem sharia law into British law is "inevitable". Parliament and the Courts make our laws and they should apply to everyone.
The Archbishop may have been confused but the issue is straightforward. He has no right to suggest British Moslem women should become second class citizens. In a marital breakdown sharia law would grant custody to a husband irrespective of the welfare of the children and turf the wife out of the family home - to be rehoused and supported financially by British taxpayers - while the husband arranges a second marriage to a younger woman complete with a farmland dowry from his family's village in Waziristan.See the full content of this document
