The Art of Dick Twinney ; Rabbits in the Dunes

Summary

The sand dunes of the South West are the favoured habitat of many mammals and birds, the most ubiquitous of these being the rabbit. In near optimum conditions the rabbit has flourished; burrows are easily excavated in sandy soil, there is a plentiful supply of grasses as a food source and usually limited persecution by man as most dunes are on National Trust property or wildlife reserves. This week's painting features a typical sight which can be seen on any evening winter walk through our sand dunes.

Although rabbits can be a great pest to farmers, foresters and market gardeners, there are few more charming and amusing sights than rabbits at their evening feeding and play sessions. The two portrayed are in the dunes behind Crantock Beach near Newquay here in Cornwall but could be anywhere here in the Westcountry with similar habitat.
