Back in the 1970s, the peapod wine made by self-sufficiency nuts Tom and Barbara in The Good Life was a running joke throughout the TV series. Ambushed guests spluttered in shock after one sip of the eyewateringly revolting - and superstrong - concoction.
But homemade drinks can be completely delectable, says Susy Atkins, The Telegraph's wine critic, who lives near Exeter. She has just brought out a beautiful illustrated book called How to Make Your Own Drinks, with tips on making delicious drinks at home. Recipes range from limoncello to blackberry wine by way of mead, egg nog and pepper vodka. She also includes many wonderful non- alcoholic recipes, such as mint tea, elderflower cordial and lavender lemonade.
