Audi's Latest Tt Is in Homage to Original Quattro Models

Summary

HOW some laughed when Audi came up with the five-cylinder engine in the original Quattro of the 80s. Unbalanced, a gimmick, said some, writes Reg Burnard. And how wrong they were for, as we now know, the Quattros swept every board clean.

So it's no surprise, then, in this its centenary year, that Audi should go back to that lay-out - and deck it out in their iconic TT. You could say they've merely added the suffix RS. Merely? The engine, smaller and lighter in bulk than most thought possible, is now mounted across amidships; Quattro four-wheel drive principles are still there. A tuned exhaust makes a delicious, evocative sound (it's good simply to sit in the car and listen to it) and there's enough power for 170mph - but, thanks to Quattro, you won't burn any rubber. And huge disc brakes will stop you safely.
