Beachgoers Urged to Look Out for Jellyfish

BEACH users were yesterday urged to be on the lookout for stinging jellyfish, after a mass stranding of mauve stinger jellyfish and "unprecedented" reports of Portuguese Man o'War washing up - especially in the South West.

The Marine Conservation Society (MCS), which runs a UK jellyfish survey, said a mass stranding of mauve stingers occurred at Reef Beach on the Isle of Lewis, in the Hebrides, last week. And the survey revealed more than 60 reports of Man-o'Wars - far more than in recent years - in Devon, Cornwall and Wales, and even as far north as the Isle of Man.
