With reference to Richard Jones' letter (November 14) on restoring railway links, it is all very well to portray Dr Beeching and "his infamous closures" as a villain, but he was simply brought in to make some sense out of Britain's hopelessly unremunerative system, the product of 19th century competition rather than a sensible, co-ordinated approach.

Far more blame for going "over the top", as it were, can be laid at the door of then Transport Minister Ernest Marples - an enemy of the railways if ever there was one.
