Residents of a Cornish village which was ravaged by floods more than two years ago have welcomed the approval of a scheme of defences to safeguard their lives and homes.

Properties in Boscastle, North Cornwall, still bear the water mark where the River Valency, swollen by freak rains, burst its banks and ripped apart the heart of the village in August 2004.
