Summary
Our coal-mining heritage is brought to mind by the brass miner's lamp from the former Ferndale Colliery, South Wales, at tomorrow's Falmouth antiques and collectors' fair. No 1 pit shaft was sunk in 1859 but in 1867 an explosion caused by a miner's lamp tore underground. A second disaster 17 months later killed 53 men and boys.
