No-one would argue that overall public spending needed to be cut to resolve the national budget deficit although there is a case that some sectors such as the police are so fundamental to the good running of society that excessive reductions would not be costeffective.

The consequences of a police force hampered by a shortage of manpower and resource would create a situation that would have implications not only for law and order but would cost more to rectify than the savings that were banked.
