Summary
All who live in the countryside are desperately concerned at the announced future loss of another 3,000 village post offices, knowing how this will continue to rip the heart out of an already endangered traditional way of life.
What our politicians do not own up to is that they have passed responsibility for such important decisions to appointed remote commissioners, and presumably hope we won't notice. To be precise, under the terms of the Treaty of Amsterdam, 1997, Article 88, our Government must seek the permission of the European Commission to "state aid" the Post Office. It was graciously granted permission to do this to the sum of "pounds150 million annually (maximum) for three years". Subsequently, EU Directive 2002/39/EC amended this earlier directive requiring permission to be granted before any subsidy could be granted.See the full content of this document
