THERE'S nothing quite like a walk out into the middle of nowhere. That's what I told WMN photographer Richard Austin the other day, but he didn't look too convinced as he stood, laden down with camera equipment, ankle deep in peaty mud.

Nevertheless, we set forth - as was witnessed in a recent WMN report about archaeologists who have discovered that the now amazingly empty moors of central Exmoor were once busier than Piccadilly Circus. That was a long time ago. More than 3,500 years ago if a flint they found was anything to go by.

The empty moors in question are to be found east of the B3223 road that runs north out of Simonsbath up on to the hills that create a vast swathe all the way to Lynton.
