Summary
Cap tallies are the cloth bands worn by sailors round their hats identifying their ship, and a small collection of them will be found at tomorrow's antiques and bygones fair in Lostwithiel. There are over forty dealers always at this popular fair, which is held monthly in the town described as the antiques centre of Cornwall.
As these tallies have a dot after the ship's name, all are of WWII vintage and are from HMS Arethusa, Grenville, Hardy, London, Ormonde, Protector and Revenge. Taking just two of these vessels throws up interesting stories. All are easy to research with details often online, like the fact that HMS Grenville with six other British ships was returning from Dutch waters on 19th January 1940 when a mine exploded, capsizing the ship.See the full content of this document
