An entrepreneur from the South East last night became the first candidate from David Cameron's controversial "priority list" to be chosen for a seat last night when he was selected to fight the sprawling new Central Devon constituency at the next election.

Melvyn Stride, a 44-year-old fromTwickenham, was selected over two other candidates in a vote taken by Devon members of the Conservative Party.
