Summary
Almost 100 years ago, long before Harry Potter, there was another fictional boy hero at boarding school who caught the attention of the UK and rapidly became a household name. He also wore round spectacles and was teased by other schoolchildren, but there any similarity ends.
In the March of 1907 a series of stories about boys at school appeared in The Gem, a ha'penny weekly printed by Alfred Harmsworth's Amalgamated Press, a publishing house producing mostly comic magazines and a few, lightweight stories. Entitled Tom Merry and Co, they were written under the pseudonym Martin Clifford by Charles Hamilton, and were received so well that the editor, Percy Griffiths, was encouraged to launch a new weekly called The Magnet.
