An Italian chef found guilty of knowingly infecting his lover with HIV and hepatitis C was yesterday branded "despicable" by police. Giovanni Mola refused to wear condoms after beginning a sexual relationship with the woman in 2003 in Edinburgh. The 38- year-old, who claimed to have had 200 lovers, had been diagnosed with the viruses three years earlier. He showed no emotion as the jury returned a majority verdict after less than two hours of deliberation. He will be sentenced later.
THE Government has no plans to back a minute's silence for those who died as a result of slavery but could support a memorial day, Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott said yesterday. Mr Prescott said the Government has "not sought to dictate" how victims of the slave trade should be commemorated.
