Pesticides campaigner Georgina Downs is entitled to her day in court but if her test case victory is to carry any weight she needs to take a look at the far greater use of chemicals by gardeners and the unrestricted use of chemicals in the home.

For a farmer to spray fields the sprayer operator must be qualified and take regular refresher courses to prove his competence. The sprayer must have regular inspections to ensure it is fit for use. The sprays used have had regular checks to prove their effectiveness and safety and can only be applied after an examination of the field by a qualified agronomist. They must be stored in a locked store and safely disposed of if they have gone past their use-by date.
