Granville Taylor takes a close look at the first of two Devon & Cornwall weekend meetings - Spooners & West Dartmoor at Cherrybrook This was a vital afternoon for the Devon & Cornwall title holder Richard Woollacott, whose bid to secure his first National jockeys' championship was in the balance. The Devon rider began the day with 35 wins, giving him a slender one-win advantage over the young Welshman John Mathias, with Jake Greenall breathing down their necks on the 32 winner mark. Ironically this fixture was postponed because of waterlogging on Easter Saturday. As we know, the June weather tends to be a little different from April, and this time the warm, dry spell meant firmer ground and a scarcity of runners. Mixed Open (McLaughlin Construction) Richard Woollacott picked up a useful ride on Ross Oliver's Oscatello who started odds on to follow up his Folkestone hunter chase success. In a field of four, the only real danger appeared to be the Beaufort qualified She Knows You Know, who made the running under Mark Wall. Oscatello stalked the mare until jumping to the front four out before easing clear to win by 10 lengths.
Confined (The Rock Inn, Yelverton) Deimne gave Woollacott another easy victory, this time pouncing on Lisheen Storm at the 15th fence for her fourth consecutive success of the season. This tough little seven-year-old mare must be one of the bargains of the season and has done trainers Pauline and Tony Geering proud. Having been twice placed over hurdles at Cork as a four-year-old, she had lost her form in Ireland, and was picked up for only Pounds 700 at Ascot sales last October for a local partnership headed by Roger Knowles.See the full content of this document
