Children Just As Proud of the Fallen ; Letters

Summary

I write in my capacity as chairman of the Royal British Legion (RBL) Birdsmoorgate (Dorset) Branch, with a point of view in defence of schools and primary educated pupils in this area of Dorset.

Referring to a letter by Catherine Cracknell (WMN, Nov 18), saying that she believes schools should teach about the significance of the 11th hour of the 11th month etc. I can say that assisting my wife for the past 11 years as our area poppy organiser, we find the young give as they can afford. With only a very few apathetic to the cause. Regarding the schools, we found Thorncombe most enthusiastic towards the RBL. They annually make up posters about the Remembrance theme and many are on display as you enter the school. Some years back the school came third in a national RBL poster competition. The school also observed the nation's two-minutes' silence watching on national TV. While at Marshwood School this year, a display of poems most graphic - words of "bullets flying - blood oozing, wounded dying" come to mind - all under the heading of Service and Caring for Others. I can also confirm that Marshwood School observed the two-minutes' silence.
