J Williams, Newquay Over recent years the poinsettia, Euphorbia pulcherrima , has become the indoor symbol of Christmas. It's the large bract surrounding the rather insignificant flowers that provide a wealth of colour over the Christmas period.

Poinsettias belong to a genus of more than 2,000 species. The genus is variable and contains annuals, perennials, herbs, shrubs and trees. They all have toxic/irritant milky white latex (sap). Many are native to sub-tropical and warm temperate regions.
