IF FURTHER proof were needed of the way Labour politicians sought to turn the debate on hunting with dogs into a class issue when they forced through a ban five years ago, it comes today. The revelation that senior Labour Party figures intend to seize on the Conservative pledge to repeal the ban as evidence that the Tories "haven't changed" underlines precisely where Labour stands on this issue.

And it is not, as ministers might like us to believe, on the side of animal welfare and making good law, but rather in dredging up inaccurate and out-of-date stereotypes of "Tory toffs".
