Classic Sight As Owls Go a-Hunting

Summary


Out over the old marsh field sailed two ghostly barn owls, bobbing and dipping as if on strings. I almost made up my mind right away to come and gate-lean every night, but common sense and distance suggested otherwise. Here was one of the classic sights of the countryside taking place at dimity time - that moment 'twixt day and night that in summertime just seems to hang before one's eyes in washes of Payne's Grey.

Occasional shrieks rent the air as the two owls hunted and then one dropped, mantled for a few seconds over its prey, then lifted with what could only have been a large rat. Off flew the owl with the rat hanging from its talons, followed by its mate towards farm buildings shadowy in the fading light.
