Clegg's Antics Will Cost His Party Votes ; Letters

Summary

The Deputy Prime Minister and the leader of the Liberal Democrats tells his activists to "hold their nerve" saying: "With power comes protest.". I am sure many people both inside the Liberal Democrats and the electorate at large are also asking whatever happened to three key words that also come with power - principles, values and promises? All of them have been cast aside so cheaply by the Lib Dems as they got their feet firmly under the Cabinet table and settled into the back seats of their ministerial cars.

When you sign pledges, Mr Clegg, and you abandon them, you immediately bring into question principles, values and promises and when it's clear that you and others pay lip service to such matters is it any wonder your own activists and those who voted for you feel so let down and hung out to dry? When we see many hard-working families up and down the country in both the public and private sector about to lose their jobs, yet bankers are still getting obscene amounts in bonuses, we ask: Is that principled? We all remember Vince Cable stating he would "bash the bankers". What happened to that promise then? As the elections loom in May, many Lib Dem councillors are going to be working to get elected against a political environment not of their making. They could well pay a heavy political price. You, Mr Clegg, will be the prime reason for their possible demise.
