DAVID Cameron pledges a reduction in the "number, size, scope and influence of quangos". I hope this includes the eight regional development agencies established in April 1999 and the ninth in London added in July 2000. Their five statutory purposes are to: Further economic development and regeneration; promote business efficiency; promote employment; enhance development and application of skill relevant to employment, and contribute to sustainable development.
Since 1999 they have cost the UK taxpayer more than Pounds 15 billion, and from their remit it would appear that their responsibilities could easily be transferred to existing government departments, resulting in considerable savings to taxpayers.See the full content of this document
