HIGHWAYS bosses yesterday defended their gritting policy after dozens of accidents on untreated roads prompted widespread criticism.

Dozens of motorists across Devon and Cornwall were involved in minor accidents as cars slid out of control on black ice. Thousands of others were stuck in queues for hours as roads, both major and minor, had to be closed and damaged vehicles recovered.
