Summary
Crime never stopped at Knowstone in the 19th century, not even around Christmas.
27th November 1830. On Thursday night the 18th instant, an outhouse attached to the dwelling house of Mr John Buckingham a respectable farmer situate at Owlaborough in Knowstone was feloniously broken open and entered and three fat geese were killed and stolen together with other poultry; very early the following morning two persons were traced by their footsteps in the hoar frost and by the blood from the geese, near to a house not very far distant when all further traces of the thieves were lost, but very strong suspicions of their persons are entertained. It is but justice to the labourers of this parish to say that nearly the whole of them are considered to be perfectly innocent of the commission of the repeated and most diabolical outrages or felonies, that have for several years past been, and still continue to be committed; to the utter disgrace and annoyance of the respectable and well-disposed inhabitants of the parish.See the full content of this document
