Crews Full of Praise Upon Arrival in City

Summary

Ocean racing yachts of all shapes and sizes have begun arriving in Plymouth in numbers. The Rolex Fastnet Race leaders began arriving on Monday night with Maxi Banque Populaire smashing the race record. By midday yesterday about 11 others had finished the race. Some moored up in Sutton Harbour while others anchored near the breakwater. Hundreds of boats are expected to arrive into the city during the next couple of days, having completed the 608-mile dash from the Isle of Wight.

The harsh conditions at sea have caused some teams to withdraw from the race, with a number of yachts suffering damage. American Nick Dana, a crew member with the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team - which arrived in Plymouth yesterday morning - said teams will rate Plymouth as a finish for the race.
