IT'S walks festival time again - or, at least, it's that time of the year when organisers of such events are sending out invitations and press releases. This year more than ever will be staged across the region - I feel safe in saying that, because that has been the trend for the past decade.

The growth is hardly surprising - walks festivals are a win-win idea. The local economy is boosted by the usually slightly out-of- season boon, and walkers get to hike in lovely and interesting places with the help of expert guides. What's not to like? I've just had my annual invitation to lead a couple of hikes in the event which many regard as England's ultimate walks festival - I refer to the one that is staged, somewhat improbably, 28 miles out into the ocean from Land's End.
