IF TELEVISION sets can be made more cheaply in Beijing than Birmingham, electrical retailers will, inevitably, switch to Chinese manufacturers. The resultant loss of manufacturing industry in Britain is serious and new jobs must be found for the redundant workers.

If milk is cheaper in continental Europe than in Britain, the same logic applies. But the consequences for the landscape and for Britain's food security - an increasingly important consideration at a time of great global upheaval - are even more wide-ranging and long-lasting.
