Summary


Charles Robert Darwin. Born February 12, 1809. Died April 19, 1882 - so reads the plaque in Westminster Cathedral, reminding us that the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth is fast upon us. I have been trying in recent months to avoid Charles Darwin, but today I'm giving in. I do so because I am weary of hearing Darwin's theories trotted out as if they were the last word in understanding the complexity of life - and because, increasingly, Darwin's work is cited by militant secularists as proof positive of positions that Darwin not only did not take, but which he explicitly rejected.

Leading the pack is Richard Dawkins, a professorial fellow of New College, Oxford, sometimes referred to as "Darwin's Rottweiler".
