Summary
Like all great designers, Dr Christopher Dresser trained as an architect and, having a clear picture in his mind, was able to provide interiors and ornaments as well. He provided Liberty & Co with years of drawings, which when produced in silver were not as successful as those in pewter because of cost.
Many of his better pieces, while not in silver, were commissioned in silver plate and a typical example is the crow's foot silver- plated claret jug, shape 2045, in Charterhouse Auctioneers Sherborne sale on Friday. An unusual piece, it has a stoneware body by Doulton and mounts by Hukin and Heath of Birmingham, and as Dresser was appointed art adviser to the company around 1878, it would suggest this was on a freelance basis as he was already supplying work elsewhere.See the full content of this document
