Dig Uncovers Iron Age Village

Summary

The remains of an Iron Age village have been uncovered during the building of a water treatment works in West Somerset.

Archaeologists from Somerset County Council have unearthed the remains of one hut with its floor still intact, and the outline of another roundhouse. They believe they are working on the edge of a settlement of five or six houses at Maundown water treatment works near Wiveliscombe. The finds are unusual because they date from 200 years after the Romans occupied Britain, but the round huts are in the earlier Iron Age style.
