Summary
THIS week Dirty Nails has been pruning his young apple trees. He planted them early in the year as "maiden w hips", which have a year's growth on M26 ("bush") rootstock. His tip-bearing Worcester Pearmain and Cox-like Sunset have made excellent growth over the season. Dirty Nails pinched off a small amount of blossom in the springtime to concentrate all the tree's energy into growing, watered them thoroughly throughout the summer and maintained a thick weed free mulch of compost all around (but not on) the stem.
Formative pruning now, just as the leaves have fallen, to induce the springtime sprouting of a clutch of stems - and in following years create a goblet effect of fruiting branches - involves simply snipping off the top third of the whip.See the full content of this document
