Dartmoor-based vet Dr John Gallagher came to prominence when he led hundreds of agricultural vets to petition the last Government on a cull of diseased badgers to prevent the spread of bovine TB. Farmer John Dawe, from West Devon, is a former chairman of the county's NFU branch and has had first-hand experience of bovine TB. With a projected badger cull in Wales still in a state of flux, they have combined to outline their views and chronicle the sad history of the epidemic, which caused the deaths of 38,000 cattle last year Misinformation is now almost the norm when it comes to the subject of TB and badgers.
For 18 years, the old Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries produced an annual report on Bovine Tuberculosis in Badgers, published by HMSO with the consultative panel, which comprised representatives from the farming industry, vets, medics, RSPCA and conservation groups, including the National Federation of Badgers Groups, the predecessor of the Badger Trust.See the full content of this document
