THE message might not be a new one, but the messenger certainly is. Nicholas Stern, the venerable Lord Stern who has done so much to force the climate change debate into the mainstream, stoked the ire of farmers everywhere this week when he was quoted as saying people needed to reconsider eating meat.

The economist even went as far as to suggest consumption of cows and pigs might one day be a social taboo on par with drink-driving.
