Dawn and dusk nature watches become a passion and I try to keep them up during the winter though I find this real cold tiring. But when dawn breaks over a frosty hilltop the rather bleak, empty landscape warms to the heart when a line of footprints, fox tracks actually, tell me I'm not alone and certainly never lonely.

Foxes will now have mated but some of last year's cubs will be roaming, looking for a home and a few live in groups. In theory foxes could live as long as dogs, 10-12 years but in fact many die before the end of their first winter and few survive a third year. Where they are not harassed by man the mature foxes live longer and a more stable society exists. Some vixens remain in the territory of their parents all their lives and how fox society really works is still not fully known as it varies from area to area. What we do know is that foxes can live successfully in many habitat types and adapt well to local conditions.
