Summary


ANEW opinion poll has sparked an early election frenzy at Westminster. The received wisdom has been that it would not be before May, or even June. Now, with Labour's standing apparently improving, some are pencilling in March 25 as the date Gordon Brown will go to the country.

This is apparently based on the findings of a Sunday Times poll showing that the Tory lead over Labour has dropped from 13 points to nine in a few days - an indication, it is said, of support for Brown hardening as each day passes. Chancellor Alistair Darling's popular attack on bankers' bonuses may have helped to narrow the gap.
