Summary


A MAJOR row is brewing between the National Farmers' Union and the Livestock Auctioneers' Association (LAA) over a proposed concession to the new electronic identification (EID) tag rules.

Under the forthcoming EU legislation, the United Kingdom is being offered a derogation that EID tags may not be needed on sheep if they go for slaughter under 12 months old. Defra wrung the concession out of Europe by arguing that the UK sheep industry was much larger than other member states' sheep sectors, and that in this country sheep were traded much more regularly.
