E VERYONE was upbeat and optimistic. We'd finished with all that horrible war stuff and we were looking forward to a rosy future - it's no wonder we look back at the 1950s with such warmth - as a decade, it positively glows in the public imagination.

At least it does when you read statements like the one above - spoken by a chap called Peter Hesp who was a press officer at the Festival of Britain, staged in 1951.
