Summary
At parliamentary election time, a main political party proclaims a list of its objectives. Issues addressed include health care, education, social security and pensions, crime, housing, immigration, defence, the environment and perhaps industry. All parties say roughly the same things but in different ways so, taken at face value, all political parties claim to be social democratic.
But has the Government listened to its supporters? When it came to power, despite a failed experiment with the exchange rate mechanism the country was in good economic health. Now, a decade later, the same health care costs twice as much and the education system is failing to reduce illiteracy .
