Summary


The fact that the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Primary Care Trust is, like Cornwall Council, moving with unseemly haste to obey the dictats of the government is very worrying.

In fact, the issue of a social enterprise to deliver community services has been in the air for some time now, well before the change of government. On the face of it, social enterprises or community interest companies (CIC) sound like quite a good idea but, as always, the devil is in the detail. They will not be under NHS control - this is worrying not only for the pay and conditions of staff but, also, for scrutiny and standards of care. But, most worrying, is the possibility that, a social enterprise or CIC having been set up and working well, some private concern could bid for the contract and suddenly there's a whole new world of private enterprise with its emphasis on profits and a whole new meaning to efficiency.
